Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Why is it important to have a proposal? Can’t I just send my manuscript to a publisher or agent?

Standard industry protocols for both agents and publishers, is to send in a proposal along with sample chapters. A well constructed proposal puts authors on a level playing field with other author’s submissions. Acquisition editors often complain of proposal fatigue, so not only is a proposal 100% necessary, you have to make sure it stands out. That’s where AuthorTalk™ comes in.

Why do I only have “one chance”?

Publishers and agents are inundated with book proposals and manuscripts so you need to make it count if you are going to catch their eye and get a contract. There is rarely a second chance to send a proposal to a publisher once it has been rejected.

If I purchase this service, how will my proposal gain access to publishers and agents?

After you have completed the service you choose, you will upload your final draft onto the CMS private website with a badge denoting the particular proposal critique process you chose.  It will remain there for ECPA (Evangelical Christian Publishers Association) memberspublishers and agentsto access for six months.

How is this service any different than other proposal services I’ve seen?

While other proposals services can help with your proposal, after you’re done you must get it in front of publishers. At AuthorTalk™, once you’ve complete your proposal, it will be uploaded onto the CMS website for six months for all ECPA members to access and if interested, contact you directly.  No other service in the industry gets your proposal in front of member publishers and literary agencies than AuthorTalk™/CMS. You are also free to send your proposal to agents or publishers yourself.

If I elect to go with the silver or gold service, who will critique my manuscript?

A seasoned literary agent will professionally critique your proposal through email and a personal phone consultation, offering tools and insights into the industry while encouraging the development of a strong proposal you can be proud of.

Will I have access to someone during this process if I have trouble navigating the process?

Yes. You will have access to a professional literary agent as well as the great people at CMS /ECPA.

How is this price comparable to other proposal services?

Some proposals services are comparable and some a bit cheaper but you really do get what you pay for. Aside from working with a seasoned agent, AuthorTalk™/CMS is the only proposal service in the Christian book industry that will place your proposal in front of Christian publishing houses and literary agents who are looking for new authors. Also, very few services offer a personal phone consultation with a literary agent.

How important is the phone consultation? What things can I ask? Will we review the agent’s critique?

In this digital age, nothing is more comforting than speaking with someone directly, especially on such an important and personal matter as your book. This is your chance to speak one-on-one to an industry professional about your book proposal, the critique and the book industry in general.

How important is it to have the final edit of the Gold Service be a part of the process?

To complete your book proposal process, we believe it is important that your sample writing meets the same professional quality as your book proposal. This is the most important part of the proposal and you'll want publishers and agents to see your best work.
